Can wearables enhance your lifestyle or sap your energy?

Hello ,,

We can all agree that technology is moving forward all the time. Most of us find it hard to keep up with all the data we can now measure and the advice provided by the various apps.

At our workshop last night, we were discussing the wearable technology used by members of the group and their experiences with it.

The automatic advice provided by the apps on things like recovery, available energy when doing long sessions, readiness to train, etc, is often questionable, so the trick is in making sense of the numbers to such a degree that they provide useful input to decision making rather than being an encumbrance and added stress.

If you need a bit of help with your gadget, or an objective helper that can take account of all these data and more to guide your training, check out our coaching packages by clicking the button.

Building good habits is fundamental to both training and fuelling success and many of the wearable technologies can facilitate that.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been around for a long time and both the trends and acute variations can be useful. Trends can give a good idea of whether your condition is degrading for whatever reason and acute values like the overnight average or morning value can indicate a given action you took is good or not so good.

For example, a couple of beers in the evening can promote a low HRV, which could be an indication that alcohol impairs your recovery - it does mine!

Since we spend a lot more time just living than we do training, trying out some of the activity and sleep tracking options seems a good move. In terms of sleep accuracy, there is a lot of variability but remember that everyone is different, so as long as your tracker is showing consistent variability you can learn from it.

The focus of these things is to improve your lifestyle and therefore your recovery, and as a consequence your training and fitness.

With a bit of thought you can start to improve your lifestyle and habits, step by setp and we think that wearable technology can help that. It isn't perfect but it's probably good enough to be useful.
