You can't build fitness if you don't eat enough, under-fuelling makes no sense but most endurance athletes do it at some time.

Hello ,,

We can all agree that if we want our bodies to get stronger and fitter they need adequate fuel to make those adaptations happen.

So why is it that many of us choose to under fuel and compromise our success. In almost all circumstances, being lighter is a marginal gain but being faster and stronger is a fundamental requirement.

We have recently been investigating a diet tracker, Cronometer, to assess our diets and that of some of the athletes we work with. It is a hassle to record what we eat but over time it becomes a good habit and the insights are very worthwhile.

Working in this holistic way, accounting for lifestyle and nutrition factors in association with more conventional training sessions we are able to help people build fitness sustainably after injury or illness, or in some cases after long periods of ups and downs in fitness and fatigue.

Calories are the most important in providing fuel to build your fitness but you also need adequate protein, carbohydrates and fats for a healthy recovery. It only takes a small deficit to start causing potentially long term problems.

Many people say that over-training would be better reframed as under-recovery and nutrition is fundamental to recovery. As you can see, if you under fuel, you under recover and hence run the risk of long term, chronic problems that in the worst case could completely compromise your participation in the sport you enjoy.

So doing spot checks on your diet or employing someone to help you now and again can be a very worthwhile investment of your time and money.
